CROSSING THE LINE. AGAIN.

Pope Backs Turkey’s Bid to Join European Union

ANKARA, Turkey, Nov. 28 — Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Turkey on Tuesday armed with a surprise gesture of good will aimed at blunting Muslim anger toward him: he backed Turkey’s long-stalled desire to join the European Union, reversing a statement he made two years ago.

During your September 12 speech in Regensburg, you triggered a global crisis with your ill-considered comments on Islam. Here you go again. Do you think the Church should have a say on who is to be accepted or not accepted into the European Union? It all says a lot about how out of touch you and the Vatican really are.

Ηey man. Not really interested in defending the current pope (or any other pope for that matter), but I don't really think he supported Turkey's bid to join the EU. This was claimed by the turkish PM after meeting with him, and the Vatican spokesperson mumbled something diplomatic so as not to contradict him. Nobody actually heard the pope supporting the idea. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Plus your comment goes both ways. Was it alright to voice his objections on Turkey entering the EU in the first place? When you agreed with him was it alright for him to have a say on political matters?

You are right as usual GSH. The comment does cut both ways. I think the Pope, whether I agree with him or not, has no business in matters of the state (or the EU, in this case).

I would have certainly written against him when he expressed opposition to Turkish entry; unfortunately, I did not get back to blogging until this fall.
